     I've never seen anything like this before.  Apparently you can  
get in to ferret (the executable runs), but when you try to "use" a  
dataset, something fails.  Based on the 'lnetcdf' message above, I  
immediately suspect the netcdf library.  Did you install this  
yourself?  Did it come from fink?  Can you verify that it works  
outside ferret (using, e.g., ncdump)?

     This message is coming from the graphics package used by ferret,  
GKS.  Are you certain that X11.app was running?  Ferret uses X11 for  
graphics.
